Find out moreDelia Huddy grew up surrounded by books. After taking a degree in English at King's College London, she began to work in publishing, first at Constable & Co, then Hamish Hamilton, and then with close friend Julia MacRae at Julia MacRae Books. Latterly she became Editorial Director at Random House Children's Books. Alongside her distinguished career in publishing, Delia wrote for children and young people - novels, picture books and young fiction - over 30 titles in all. At the end of her life, in 2005, Delia was working on the text for The Christmas Eve Tree.
This absolutely beautiful book will really instil the true Christmas spirit in all who read it. Planted carelessly, the little fir tree has no chance to grow, so stays small and stunted. No wonder that it’s left in the shop after all the other trees are taken to decorate homes. But something special happens and the little tree is at the centre of a real Christmas celebration and, almost miraculously, is given a chance to grow again. The story is one of hope and new beginnings, and Emily Sutton’s illustrations, full of details that children will love, have a wonderful almost folk art feel. A tender Christmas story with charming artwork by Emily Sutton, illustrator of Tiny. When the ugly little fir tree is taken to the city, no one wants to buy him; they prefer the big tall trees. But a homeless boy asks the shopkeeper if he can take the tree, and down by the river in a cardboard box, decorated with a few candles, the tree finds itself at the centre of a magical Christmas Eve it will never forget. A Christmas tale with a classic feel but a modern theme at its heart.
