Rob had only to look out of his studio window to find the inspiration for Russell. The rolling countryside surrounding his home is brimming with sheep, other wildlife, sheep, rural beauty, and more sheep. russell the sheep is his first picture book.
This is a charming, clever and often hilarious story dealing with overcoming those awful fears of that terrible saga, the first day of school. Splat is cat who is nervous about his first day in cat class. So nervous in fact that he takes his mouse friend Seymour with him his lunch box. When the lunch box opens at school, chaos ensues! Very witty and combined with fantastic funny furry drawings, this book is bound to raise a Cheshire grin or two.
From the same Sheep that made his debut back in 2005, Russell is here for a pure snowy holiday treat. Complete with a book and CD readers won’t be disappointed as Russell sets about repairing Santa’s sleigh before Christmas has to be cancelled. An engaging and often amusing story.
If you are hearing that toddler mantra of ‘can’t get to sleep’ or ‘don’t want to go to sleep’ then this is the picture book for you. Russell the sheep suffers from insomnia but in the end his adventures are so exhausting he goes to sleep. Enthralling, enchanting and soothing by turns, toddlers will be drawn in by the simple text and delightfully understated illustrations. A bedtime read par excellence.
Shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. What the judges said: A book that makes friends! Its limited colour palette works very well, particularly in its use of white. It also gives a great sense of texture – the sheeps’ fleeces really do look fluffy. It is actually more sophisticated than it first appears, working at different levels whilst providing something to laugh at on every page.
