You might have seen us recently appear on The Apprentice. We were invited on TV to judge the candidates task to create a children’s book. Now here at LoveReading4Kids we read hundreds and hundreds of children’s books every year. And sell thousands and thousands of them.
It’s our job to make sure we know about, read and review the very best children’s books being published today. Books for all ages - from babies to young adults. And beyond - with our sister website LoveReading. Books for all interests. Books to support every hobby and interest. Books for every genre. Books for every reader. And non-readers too. Picturebooks. Fiction. Non-Fiction. Graphic Novels. Poetry. The whole shebang.
So, back to The Apprentice. The task showed just how difficult it is to create brilliant books for kids. They’re a tough audience. And so we are we! We didn’t rate the books created by the candidates - but that’s not to say there aren’t some brilliant books out there for children. That’s why we have to support and celebrate our amazing authors and illustrators. That’s our job. To help shine a light on the books they create lovingly for the young people in your life. To showcase them. Shout about them from the rooftops. There are tons of them. And LoveReadiung4Kids is here to help you find them. The right book. At the right time. For the right child. Sign up to our newsletter to keep up-to-date with and best of the best brand new books being published to keep every child sated.
The boys team on The Apprentice decided to write a book about poo. We were quite disparaging really as it felt like the lowest common denominator, but the more we reflected on it, we remembered how many brilliant books are out there about poo. Here for your kids’ delight, we have collected some great kids’ books about poo, toilets and potty humour. They’re brilliant for lots of laughs, loads of learning and toilet-training support:
Why do kids love books about poo?
There are very few universal truths in children’s publishing, but one of them is this: poo is comedy gold. Comedy gold, if done well of course!
Kids are fascinated by our bodies. How they work, what comes out of them, and especially the parts that aren’t necessarily always talked about in public. A number two. Poo. Poop. It sits right at the crossroads of curiosity, rebellion, and humour. Belly tickling humour.
But for us, there’s also a developmental reason why we should be happy about the poop obsession. Toddlers and early primary children are actively learning about toilet training, understanding about their own bodies and how they function. Books about poo help demystify something that can sometimes feel confusing for kids and stressful for parents. When handled with humour, it can reduce anxiety, normalise the experience, and give children the language to talk about their bodies without shame.
For slightly older kids, and as The Apprentice experience showed, toilet humour evolves into social bonding. Shared giggles over a ridiculous title or gross fact book are part of playground (and boardroom) culture. Bottom Burps. Trumps. Farts. These books tap into the joy of being silly together - and sometimes, they sneak in science along the way.
