June 2022 Book of the Month | When Martha invites us into her wonderful world, she’s too small for readers to see. That’s because the first spread in the book is an illustration of the universe. We zoom in tighter and tighter, as Martha maps out the solar system for us, then Earth, her city, her street until finally we see inside her bedroom and her head. All the way through, Martha is the cheeriest of guides, her maps and cut outs labelled to show us all the most important and interesting things. It’s lovely to look at and Martha’s excitement and enthusiasm for the world around her is catching. It’s also a brilliant way of demonstrating the ways we’re all connected, to our communities and our world. Expect readers to be drawing their own maps as a result.
You can’t have too many potty training books, and this one is particularly charming. This story of Goldilocks starts, as you’d expect, in a wood and with ‘Once upon a time’. But it’s not porridge or chairs that are preoccupying this little girl, it’s nappies, or rather finding the right way to live without them. She needs pants, not too frilly, not too silly, and a potty, not too big, not too small. Despite a few hiccups, Goldilocks soon gets it just right, to the delight of her parents. The world is a bright mix of fairy tale and the real, both depicted in bold colours and textures, and Goldilocks herself is a wonderfully lively character, skipping happily to her potty. ~ Andrea Reece The Editor at Nosy Crow says: “For any parent going through the trials and tribulations of potty-training, this book is a godsend!”
March 2016 Book of the Month Leigh Hodgkinson’s picture book is a stylish investigation into how and where to read a book. Goldilocks-like, a young boy tries out a variety of chairs and reading locations. Not one of them suits: some are too buzzy or grimey, one’s even too slippy slimey! In his expedition, the boy is joined by a succession of friendly companions, a cat, an owl, a frog, a little Martian, and they stay with him until he realises it doesn’t matter where you sit, a book is best anywhere – a book is best when you share. Each page is an adventure in its own right, there are definitely stories hiding in the upholstery of these splendid chairs! With its stylish design (Leigh Hodgkinson has worked with Lauren Child and the influence is clear) and friendly, appealing characters, this is just right for adults and children to share. ~ Andrea Reece

She looks everywhere she can think of and finds loads of other missing things along the way. But the smile eludes her. Can anyone help her get it back? This is a charming idea and thoughtful too about things that help make us be happy.
