A mysterious art thief, a 12-year-old undercover agent and a Parisian patisserie.
Simone La Fray is a unique character, old beyond her years and discreetly training as a covert agent, with the support and encouragement of her mother, a successful operative. Simone also works to help her Father at their patisserie, what a busy life!
The descriptions of all the delicious confections made me very hungry as I was reading. The other descriptions throughout were nice and detailed and I could believe I was following Simone through the streets of Paris on the hunt for the Red Fox.
I liked this story and I was intrigued at how Simone's first field operation would go. I also thought that the other characters in the book were detailed and it would be interesting to see if Simone and her mum team up in future books, would her sister Mia ever find out about her secret life? I don't quite know when this book is set, it appears quite modern and I did briefly wonder why Simone didn't seem to go to school, but I enjoyed the story nevertheless.
I think that this book is just the right amount of believable and exciting spy adventure and I feel that younger readers will like this book and be interested in finding out more about Simone’s adventures in later books.

Simone leads a double life.
As a covert agent, she walks in the footprints of her spy mother, darting between the shadows. If she’s not sleuthing, she’s icing eclairs and dusting pastries in her father’s patisserie.
When a notorious thief returns to Paris, the patisserie is threatened, and Simone questions everything. She and her father must participate in the exclusive Chocolatiers’ Ball to redeem themselves and catch the thief. Simone’s concealed life is crumbling, the shop hangs in the balance . . . and now she needs a ball gown!
Life in a French patisserie may not be as sweet as she thought.
“S.P. O’Farrell takes readers on a memorable, sensory-rich journey through the first-person narration of his highly relatable and likable character, Simone LaFray. My eyes were glued to the words as I reveled in Simone’s daily adventures around Paris, the tastes and smells of her family’s patisserie, and the overarching mystery that cast a shadow over her sunniest days.”

“This heartwarming story brings the powerful spirit of Madeline and Nancy Drew into the new millennium with a series of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the final page. Summers in Paris were perfect, or so it seemed. Richly written, paced, and bold, Simone LaFray is the new-age hero that we have all been waiting for. À lire absolument!”
— Marie Deverneil, PhD
“This story is captivating from the first word to the last, with each chapter urging you on to find out what will happen next. As a young spy, Simone LaFray is as observant as she is clever. She needs to summon all of her wits and talents to unravel not just one, but two mysteries, both of which culminate in an exciting finale. This book was a delight to read and enjoy! I highly recommend it!”
