Charlotte's Snowman by Lainey Dee, with illustrations by Sarah-Leigh Wills, is a delightful book from an author who really knows and understands young children, having worked extensively as a nanny.
For youngsters of 4 to 6 years, the story is about Charlotte, who wakes up one winter's morning to every child's dream...a heavy snowfall. Rushing out to make a snowman, she soon imbues him with a lovely character, who wants Charlotte's hat, scarf and gloves because he feels cold and a tissue to blow his nose! Inevitably, the sun comes out and the new friendship has to end but the snowman assures Charlotte that he will only be sleeping underground, ready for her to make him all over again the next time it snows.
The accompanying pictures complement the text beautifully, being colourful and natural. The language flows well within them, I loved the use of words like 'oodles' and 'thoughtful' especially. It may not be a new theme or have the impact of Raymond Briggs but this is a great book for reading aloud at this time of year and young children will love it and be reassured if they've had a similar experience of losing a beloved snowman.
