"A nice nature based story of friendship, kindness and teamwork."
‘Spikey’ by Tereza Anteneová, supported by Hedgehog preservation campaign Hedgehog Street, tells the story of Spikey, a young hedgehog that must learn what he needs in order to survive as winter fast approaches.
There’s two sets of quiz questions throughout the book, catering to younger and older readers, meaning this book could be read and enjoyed by the entire family. Spikey is a little bit different from normal hedgehogs, sleeping at night and making friends with Ladybirds and foxes, but this is a charming tale of friendship and teamwork.
Through the quiz questions, readers are encouraged to think about how the different characters may be feeling, what they’re learning and what could happen next to maintain engagement with the story. The illustrations are in a watercolour style, light coloured and sweet, a great addition to the story and another aspect for younger readers to delight in.
A story of three unlikely friends that’s clearly written. I would have liked Spikey to have gradually learned to live in the dark in order to help to educate younger readers that seeing a hedgehog during the day isn’t a good thing. However, focusing on the friendship, kindness and teamwork themes throughout this story, it is a lovely read I’m sure young readers will enjoy.
