As if it wasn’t magical enough that brothers Ethan and Baxter run a sweetshop, they discover magical powder was delivered instead of a bag of sugar that leads to lots of fun and chaos. ‘The Lolly Shop’ by L, B and E Hackney is the first book in this series and introduces us to six and eight year old Ethan and Baxter and The Lolly Shop. When the boys discover that they can produce magic sweets, they work night and day to develop a whole new and exciting range for kids, mayhem ensues but the adults in the town are less sure of the new products. An exciting fictional adventure, which sees two young children seemingly singlehanded-ly create new sweets, run a shop and still manage to go to school, learn and have fun. I think that young readers will like the imagination in this story, and will have fun discussing the types of magic sweets they’d try to create for The Lolly Shop. There’s also black and white illustrations of the boys and the sweets throughout which would be entertaining for young readers to perhaps colour in as they read. In all, I found 'The Lolly Shop' an entertaining story full of fun that also teaches responsibility and problem solving. I’m sure this will be a treat for young readers.
