Pengwee’s Breath by Debbie Nutley and illustrated by Alexandra Rusu is a delightful children’s picture book with an important message for both children and adults. Pengwee the penguin is going to the Annual Ice Festival. He begins to feel nervous when he thinks about scary things like the scary rides at the festival.  I loved the way the author describes his anxious feelings.  She describes Pengwee feeling as though snowstorms are in his tummy and clouds are in his head. His mom advises him to take a few deep, gentle breaths in through his nose and out through his mouth. This makes him feel calmer. The beautiful blue colours in the illustrations convey a calm and restful atmosphere to the reader even though Pengwee is feeling nervous. This book teaches children that by using a simple breathing technique, they can learn to calm themselves. This is a very useful skill to learn. The tool to reduce and eliminate their nervousness is within their reach.  Children will enjoy hearing about the Ice Festival. The book is just the right length to hold the attention span of 3 to 6 year-olds. Each page has a charming illustration and 2 or 3 sentences of text and the language is perfect for the above-mentioned age group. Adults who are reading this charming story to the children can also benefit by reminding themselves to breathe to overcome feelings of anxiety.
