A few years ago, builders working in our house uncovered buried treasure beneath the floorboards. It was a little pile of Victorian toys, rather grubby and faded, and nibbled by generations of mice. Census records show that two children, Amelia and William, lived here with their parents and one servant, when the house was nearly new at the beginning of the 1870s, and it seems likely that the toys were theirs.
The discovery was a fascinating and touching reminder of the family who lived here so many years ago and it was the inspiration for this story.
