The young narrator of this joyful and joy-inducing picture book has a seemingly endless set of ideas of what to do ‘if I were Prime Minister’. These range from making sure that every tree would have a rope swing, to having libraries open day and night (and with ‘friendly old people’ there to read to the children); to ensuring that anyone who wanted a dog, or a bicycle, would have one, and anyone who wanted a friend could have at least two.
One plan involves play being a subject taught at school, with grown-ups having to go to nursery once a month to learn how to do it, ‘because play is for everyone, even the people who’ve forgotten how.’ No matter your age, these suggestions will set all sorts of ideas running, and it’s undeniable that the world would be a better place if they were made law.
Ella Okstad’s illustrations are vibrant and energetic, fingerprint patterns framing pages filled with blocks of colour. Text and illustrations make us feel anything is possible, and that a happier, kinder world is within our reach.
