When a stray dog turns up in the park where the children are playing they notice she is exhausted, thirsty and dirty. What her name is and where she comes from nobody knows. But the children call her Elki and soon she is sharing in their games in the park, eating ice cream when it is hot and playing in the snow when the winter comes.
The children love playing with her and feeding her and sharing with her but, when they all go into their homes at the end of the day, no one knows where Elki goes.
One day Elki gets sick. Now the children have to find a way to reach out and make her safe but making sure she part of their family and community. Both the illustrations and the text capture this very special relationship perfectly.

When a small group of children befriend a stray dog, the entire community is inspired to become involved.
Elki does not have a home – she is a stray dog who finds kindness in the company of a little group of children. They play together during the day, but Elki must stay alone outside every night because dogs are not allowed in their block of flats.
One day Elki disappears and is found injured. Who will look after her and how?

About Elena Arevalo Melville
Elena Arevalo Melville grew up in tropical Guatemala, surrounded by volcanoes and mountains and a large family, including a little green parrot. She has an MA in Children's book illustration from Cambridge School of Art. She is a mother, a writer, an illustrator, a cartographer and leads workshops and art clubs in comics and art for children and adults. Her published work includes a series of Fantastical Maps for Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination, contributions to small comic anthologies, and a tween picture book Niente Principe Ranocchio (No frog Prince) with Donzelli Editore (2014). She lives in Cambridge, with her partner and children and, although she still considers herself a bird person, she loves their little black cat.
