The Shy Book Synopsis

A humorous and unique way of showing children how they can combat shyness, helping discussions at home or in the classroom, The Shy Book introduces different ways that anxiety and worry can be felt physically as well as mentally, including blushed cheeks, becoming dizzy or feeling overwhelmed and self-conscious. The book also provides helpful tips on overcoming these emotions when introduced to new people, such as asking the person questions about them instead of talking about yourself and exploring things you have in common.

Fun and colourful illustrations by Liverpool-based James Munro perfectly represent the book’s various emotions throughout, creating a relatable character for children.

The author Howard Pearlstein says, ‘As a naturally introverted person, I know how uncomfortable speaking up, sharing, or talking to others can be. With this book, I wanted to let shy children know that there’s nothing wrong with feeling shy and that they’re great just the way they are. Beyond letting them know that they’re not alone, I also wanted to provide a bit of practical advice, something that could help them feel more comfortable when interacting with people.’
