A sweet, nostalgic story of friendship, make-believe and space. This will be the fifth story from Tony White that I’ve read. Although short in pages, each one manages to deliver a whole new child’s world. In ‘Angela Lawrence and Spot the Space Dog!’ we see a lovely tale of friendship between neighbours.
It’s 1958 and space is everywhere as the Russians and US compete in the space race. Angela is an imaginative confident little girl who leads her best friend (who is playing Spot the Space Dog) on intergalactic adventures from their garden. This story made me smile. It feels very nostalgic, evoking memories of playing make-believe games as a child.
Angela is a strong, smart, slightly mischievous character, and it’s nice to see how much “Spot” loves their friend. Spot also shows their intelligence, letting us know they know what might actually be happening, but seems to enjoy following Angela’s lead when playing. I think everyone would want someone like Granddad in their lives to help them get up to a bit of mischief, like sneaking Laika out to Norfolk, and allowing them to have fun.

I think that Angela Lawrence and Spot the Space Dog! would be great for readers around 7+, and could also be an interesting way to introduce the topic of space and the Space Race of the fifties and sixties.
