The Golden Heart is book five in Jamie Smart’s Flember series and it’s more than a fitting conclusion.
Junior inventor Dev and his brother Santoro are still striving to get back home to Eden with – of course – giant, super-lovable robot teddy Boja, and, crucially, a new supply of flember, the magical life force, to restore the Eden Tree.
They’re helped by old friends eg Brianne, no longer a scrappy revolutionary but much more confident, and come up against old enemies, eg Iola Gray, no longer…even human it seems.
Scattered with black and white drawings and diagrams (Dev’s gadgets and machines, so well labelled readers will feel they could create them themselves), every chapter has more tension and drama that you find in the average 300-page story, and the end is everything that readers deserve.
For all the cartoon-style adventures, there are serious messages here about responsibility – to your friends, society, yourself – and Mary Shelley might just recognise aspects of her famous doctor in Dev. It’s hard to think of a series that offers anything like the same level of adventure, ingenuity, entertainment and sheer heart.

Amazing! Five stars! Flember: The Golden Heart is an epic end to the Flember series. It was a great read and I couldn’t put it down.
This is an excellent end to the Flember series. Jamie Smart’s books always make for a fantastic read and this one is no exception.
Dev Everdew, an inventor, has to stop Iola Gray but this time without the help of his brilliant robotic bear, Boja, who was stuck in the Flember stream. Can Dev defeat Iola without Boja or will the town of Eden perish?
It’s a tense book and full to the brim with action.

A must have for fans of the series
People who have read previous books by Jamie Smart should pick this book up. The book cover is very bright and full of details that give away awaiting adventure.As I haven’t read previous parts of this series,it was like reading a standalone story.
The book comes with lots of amazing drawings that help you to imagine how the story goes.
Basically, it is like having all the characters appear in front of you and watching VR.
I found the story funny and to be honest the blurb wasn’t right, there were more than a couple of farts in this book! Ha,Ha!
