All Toby wants is to be cool and to fit in. This is very hard to do when you accidentally get crowned King by a band of Pixies that dwell at the bottom of your garden. In this latest installment of the Toby and the Pixies series, Toby decides it’s time to reinvent himself in order to be the coolest guy at school.

To do this, he decides to rename himself the “T-Train” (what could possibly go wrong with that?”) and of course, the Pixies want to help him out, but end up creating a string of chaotic events instead.

I really love this series because reading it creates a feeling of nostalgia for Saturday morning cartoons. The panels are bright and leap off the page, the dialogue is fast-paced, funny and sharp. There’s gross-out humour, barfing, smelly socks, a zit that gets super-sized, and a lot more.

When things don’t quite go to plan, the pixies decide to try and erase everyone’s memory at school in order to give him the fresh start he needs.

Comics like this are like gold to a school librarian like me, we simply cannot keep them on the shelves. There are several reasons for this, one is that the students I work with love funny, escapist comics that can simply take them out of their own minds for a little while. Second, there is a huge sense of accomplishment in completing a book in one sitting, which a lot of students can do with this series.

And once word of mouth spreads on the popularity of a comic like this, it results in a lot of students asking for it, which is a dream for librarians. This is a chaotic, fun and exhilarating comic series that is the perfect remedy for anyone struggling to get back into reading.
