I was very excited to receive Comprehension Ninja: Inference and Beyond for Upper KS2 and Comprehension Ninja: Inference and Beyond for Lower KS2 as I am the happy recipient of a set of Ninja comprehension books, fiction, nonfiction and poetry that were published a few years ago.

The layout of these two supplementary books is the same, thus providing continuity, and by repetition, a structure for good thinking habits to build upon.

Inference, the ability to hear, experience things, to interact and form opinions are skills we learn as we mature. These two books enable the learner to acquire and develop these skills through print. The ability to understand inference is a harder concept than reading for meaning and understanding which is why, I assume, the books are targeted at KS2.

We must make assumptions and draw on conclusions in words and descriptions. These two books successfully teach the strategies to achieve these goals; how to read between the lines, search for clues and summarise facts; the art of making predictions and how to retrieve information successfully.

Both books follow the same format. The first half of each book covers each skill needed, how to answer simple questions, looking at inference and making judgements and how to use evidence to answer 2 and 3 mark questions. This last skill is needed both in SATS but is also a skill needed moving on to KS3 in both English and History lessons. The second half of each book combines all these skills within one extract. There is also a set of answers at the back of each book.

Both the lower and upper KS2 books offer a wonderful selection of extracts, and the topicality, variety of appeal and appropriateness have clearly been considered. Many of the extracts have been written by Andrew Jennings himself. The extracts include such topics as poetry, classical literature including Shakespeare, myths and legends and an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction, including stories, articles and informative articles. There is something for everyone, but the books are laid out so that you can dip in and out. Each chapter stands alone, and the chapters can be completed in any order depending on the pupils interests.

These two new books will add considerably to my ‘ninja library’ of reference books and I shall be using them straight away.
