Klaus Flugge Prize winner, Eva Eland, is renowned for her illustration’s unusual colour palettes and also for her sensitive evocation of children’s feelings. Here she employs an eye-popping neon pink for Mia, our central character, who gradually becomes aware of her difference. (The contrast between the bright pink and the surrounding gentle blues and greens give a visual clue to how she is feeling).
She feels different, but finds it difficult to explain why, and while she makes efforts to fit in and to ‘be just like the others’ and even researches how to fix herself in the library and then talks to the doctor, who could find nothing wrong, she still felt different and very sad that ‘nobody seemed to care’.
But one day, another child did notice she was different and exclaimed ‘I am different too’. They found comfort in each other’s difference and shared with each other the things they loved. Eventually Mia accepts her difference and accepts that she is loved and that being different is an essential part of her being.
This is a lovely, gentle message that makes its point without any labelling and is all the better for that. Difference is not something that needs fixing but rather is something to be valued and celebrated. The striking and engaging artwork will ensure it is picked up and its positive and valuable message of self- affirmation will be well received.
