"A fascinating treasure trove of wildlife words explained for young scientists."
From the same author and illustrator pairing that brought us the excellent Encyclopedia of STEM Words and from the same small publisher that specialises in highly accessible, well designed, well produced and sturdy information books, this is another excellent reference book that deserves a place in any school library or classroom. It would make fascinating reading for any animal loving family too.
Basically, it is an illustrated A-Z of 100 words that are key to the study of animals, with each word having its own page with a simple definition and explanation and often fascinating related facts, accompanied by clear attractive illustrations, which are not mere decoration, but which carefully add to the information available and enhance the reader’s understanding.
In another clever use of layout, each page will have other terms in bold which, as the How to Use This Book page explains, can be found in the Index at the back of the book. This not only cross references other pages where the term is used but also gives a short definition of the word in question so there are many more than 100 words explained!
It takes a particular skill to be able to explain some quite difficult concepts in a concise and readable manner and Jenny Jacoby once again demonstrates how to do it well. There is no compromise on using the correct scientific terminology and so this book would be valuable and supportive in secondary settings as well as being accessible and appropriate for primary schools.

An illustrated STEM encyclopedia covering the top 100 animal-related words that kids need to know. Organised in alphabetical order and each term beautifully illustrated with humour and charm, the essential concepts will fascinate scientifically minded animal-lovers. There is a contents list at the front and a full index at the back, plenty of extra words and definitions … plus mind-boggling facts too.
