The Helena Flinn Chronicles continue with magic, mystery teamwork and the power of dreams. A year on from the events in the first book in the Helena Flinn Chronicles, Helena and her friends in the Nightmare Squad must stop the dream world from breaking as dreams become increasingly strange. I haven’t read the first book in the series and I would recommend that you begin with book one as you are put right back into Helena’s life in Vienna.

I found the magic throughout the story to be imaginative and loved Noxy the Dusk Fawn, he is the perfect cute side-kick in this magical adventure. Helena is the most skilled of the Nightmare Squad and she uses her skills throughout to protect her friends and the others at the institute as they try to help the Goblins fix the dream world.

This gives the story a great message about teamwork and helping others. However Helena also has her own mysteries to solve, like her grandfather’s curious notebook that she’s struggling to read. The guidance she receives on this and the progress she makes helps to demonstrate her character development alongside the main focus of the plot.

I enjoyed her relationship with her family. I think young readers will find her father’s games funny and her relationship with her younger sister Maddie really sweet. I found the setting of Vienna wasn’t really brought to life for me. Other than stating where the story was, I didn’t really get a feel for it as a specific location.

There was more detail about the institute which helped bring that aspect of the story to life. Structuring the setting this way, with the emphasis on the magical world can add an element of universality to the story, that magical worlds could be lying in wait under our feet no matter where we are. Readers who enjoyed the first book will enjoy joining Helena and the rest of the Nightmare Squad in their new adventure.

The ending is jaw dropping and will leave you with lots of questions and keen for the next in the Chronicles. There’s magic, mystery and teamwork galore in this adventurous delve into the power of dreams.
