This time the twins are in California, Riri and their mum’s home, a holiday for Ani and her dad who live in West Yorkshire. Separated at six months, following their parents’ divorce, the twins are now close despite their differences: hijab-wearing Riri is cautious and organised, Ani much more impulsive. Most important, neither can resist the challenge when a murder takes place virtually in front of their eyes.

With Riri’s friend Adora, skilled, self-confessed hacker, signed up as sleuth-in-training, the girls start their investigations. It’s a tough case to crack, with red herrings galore and the stakes rising even higher when a second person is murdered.
Readers will happily suspend disbelief at some of the things these young detectives get up to – adults are surprisingly happy to answer their questions and the local police department very relaxed when they help themselves to key bits of evidence – and as crime mysteries go, it’s a very good one, keeping us all guessing whodunnit until the very end.
The twins’ relationship is another one of the pleasures of the book, and Ani and Adora’s spiky relationship great fun too. Niyla Farook has certainly cracked the art of writing exciting, funny, family-based crime thrillers and this is one for fans of Sharna Jackson's The Nine Night Murder.
