Most of us know that Odysseus was a hero, right? Outwitting the Trojans, overcoming monsters on his epic ten-year journey home from the war. But if the tale was told by one of those ‘monsters’, specifically Polyphemus the Cyclops, you might see it differently, and especially if Polyphemus turns out to be a friendly young Cyclops, who gets on well with his neighbours, loves his sheep (and cheese) and just wants to hold the best party ever?
That’s the premise for this story, and Polyphemus emerges as a very engaging narrator, innocent, lots of fun, even if he can’t resist snacking on humans sometimes. With jolly black and white illustrations by Sam Caldwell throughout, this is a fresh, funny take on a centuries old story and a page-turning adventure whether Homer is a favourite, or the story of Odysseus is all Greek to you.
More adventures are planned, next up the Minotaur. If, as likely, this gives young readers a taste for new takes on ancient stories, The Othernauts by Clare Pollard is excellent.
