"A warm, relatable and reassuring look at what a home means to a child."
An interactive picturebook with peep through cut outs and flaps to lift, which explores exactly what ‘home’ means.
Homes come in many shapes and sizes and are made of different materials, but the message of this book is that home is more about how it makes you feel, rather than what it looks like.
Home is where you feel safe, home is where the people you love are, home is where you are comforted. The imaginative options it gets the child to consider range from an apple to an umbrella, a cardboard box, a cosy reading nook and finally a literal hug from a house with arms. It also introduces some more challenging ideas, such as ‘home is a place where it’s safe to fall out….and come back together’ which will resonate with any child have sibling issues.
Ultimately this is a book with a hopeful and reassuring message, that will be particularly valuable for children going through a period of change ‘wherever we go, we carry our homes with us’ The playful and quirky illustrations in collage, pencil and gouache have lovely warm tones which enhance the comforting message. Useful in classrooms to reassure new starters that home will be there for them at the end of the day and at any home where a house move is in the offing.

Home is where happiness happens Where sadness is comforted. It’s where we feel like we belong.
Home is where happiness happens Where sadness is comforted. It’s where we feel like we belong. What does it take to build a home? Bricks and concrete, windows and walls, glass and steel? Sometimes, home is something much more . . .
