The Collins kids non-fiction series continues to delight its readers with a brand new installment called All About Ancient Egypt. This series is aimed at ages 7 and up but as a librarian in a secondary school I can see millions of ways I could engage older readers, especially readers who struggle, with this amazing series and this particular edition on Ancient Egypt.
The colours are bright and really pop off the page and the information is provided in short bursts that make it extremely accessible. I love how the book provides TRUE or FALSE questions that you have to flip around to find the answer. It’s a really fun and clever way of getting the reader to engage with the history of the ancient Egyptians and to learn more.
The book is full of cool facts and vivid, bright illustrations and photographs. The layout is very clear and clean and it also provides things that kids love like lists! For example, it highlights the top five most popular sports in ancient Egypt which covers sports that you wouldn’t normally associate with ancient Egypt. This includes things like stick fighting, wrestling and rowing!
I think that when most people are asked about ancient Egypt they will automatically think of the pyramids and that’s not a surprise but this book brings to life so many other aspects of their lives like Senet and Hounds and Jackals, two very popular board games of the era.
With Q&A’s with experts, lists, illustrations and other cool facts, this is a sure-fire hit with any budding historian or anyone who simply loves a great read!
