As a kid, I was terrified of earthquakes. This was because I knew nothing about them and I watched one happen live on television in the late nineties during an American baseball game. Why did I share that fact? Because I honestly felt that if I had a book like All About Earthquakes and Volcanoes, I would have been armed with enough knowledge to understand that they never occur in eastern Canada to any significant size.

Another amazing edition to the All About series, Earthquakes and Volcanoes provides bright illustrations and fascinating facts about two very deadly natural phenomena that kids love to explore.

As with the other books in this series, the book provides True or False questions that prompt the reader to explore the book further. I also feel that these sections create the perfect moment for the reader to interact with a parent, friend or sibling and discuss the content of the book. This has the potential to generate a lot of discussion on the topic and help young readers with their confidence and curiosity about the world.

The photographs of the impact of earthquakes are fascinating and from my experience as a librarian, will draw in loads of new readers eager to see the devastation these events can unleash. We know that boys in particular are struggling more than girls to engage with books, even at young ages. This book in particular is a perfect remedy for that.

It’s absolutely crammed full of cool facts, illustrations, photos and easy to understand explanations of complex natural events. With a light hearted approach, it is really geared towards reading out loud and together with a family member.

All About Earthquakes and Volcanoes is aimed at ages 7+ and is a really wonderful introduction to this topic.
