Growing up, I was never a rocks and minerals kid, but I had a friend who was and I was always jealous of their knowledge and when I got older I was very pleased to see that my children were into rocks and minerals.
If I had a book like this in my school I’m sure I would have been absolutely fascinated with them because the cover alone is enough to draw any kid into the intriguing world within. Like all of the books in this fantastic series, All About Rocks and Minerals contains loads of information on each page without being overwhelming to younger readers. We know that the information on topics such as igneous rocks could fill a thick textbook but what this series does in an informative way is to pick out the things that kids will find interesting and have them leap off the page using illustrations and brilliant photos.
What I love is that it helps readers with tips on how to identify different rocks and minerals, giving them agency to go out and find their own, most likely bringing the book with them on their explorations. This is a really smart way to get kids interested in the world around them and to keep them reading.
Once again I myself have learned a lot from this series using the fantastic lists that the book provides. For example, we learn about the five deepest canyons in the world (none of them are the Grand Canyon, which would have been my guess!) and we learn why rocks and minerals are found in them. The lists provide an opportunity to read aloud and quiz the reader or vice versa - the reader can quiz their parents and stump them (probably easily!) with their new found knowledge.
I love this series and All About Rocks and Minerals is another great addition to it, a perfect way to create young readers.
