The story kicks off with residents’ feathers being ruffled by a flock of greedy, cheeky seagulls stealing their fish suppers (one of the thieving rascals has the audacity to remark that he’s seen the Scottish football team take better shots than Nessie’ attempts to skoosh them down!).
Later, while Nessie and co re-group (Bea helpfully suggests a mindfulness session might help), a tractor is stolen, and so Lochbank’s rainbow-moustached unicorn sheriff calls on Nessie to save the day. The trio’s crime-solving capers really ramp up when their investigation leads them to a mysterious castle on the far side of Loch Ness, and that’s not even the half of the twists and turns this tastily-layered book takes across its energetic pages.
Accompanied by a glossary of Scottish words, and a step-by-step guide to drawing Nugget, the power-and-fish-hungry bird who rules the roost at Urquhart Castle, Secret Agent Nessie is a pun-tastic, fun-tastic bundle of graphic novel glee, and comes heartily recommended for emerging independent readers who love quirky characters, and reluctant readers who respond to fast-paced funniness.
