Tall ships are arriving at the Haven Islands where Tia and her best friend Nat live, and the subject of old sea legends comes up, including that of Mother Carey’s chickens, said to alert sailors to oncoming storms. In fact, the ‘chickens’ and lighthouse keeper Mrs Eddison’s ‘fairies’ are Storm Petrels, which do take shelter behind ships at sea in wild weather.
Readers learn lots about these little birds in the story, as do Tia and Nat, who also demonstrate how children, even the youngest, can improve things for wildlife through their actions and campaigning.
