Pizza and Taco: Too Cool for School is another hilarious look at two best friends who happen to be a slice of pizza and a taco. This is a fantastic series perfect for fans of Bunny vs. Monkey and Looshkin.
In Too Cool for School, Pizza and Taco feel that they have everything they need to be ready to go back to school. They’ve got hip new backpacks and are feeling confident. Everything’s in place except for how they’re going to deal with the new kid, B.L.T.
B.L.T. is no ordinary new kid at school. He’s cool. And he knows it. First of all, he wears sunglasses indoors, which is one of the coolest things you can do. Secondly, he doesn’t care about being late for class and uses the phrase “whatever” to describe his feelings. This is also cool.
Pizza and Taco decide to watch B.L.T.’s every move, they want to study him and learn his super cool ways. The problem is, their behaviour lands them in hot apple sauce with their teacher, Mr. Apple.
This, and all of the Pizza and Taco graphic novels are hilarious. Too Cool for School is great to be read aloud and would generate a lot of discussion with younger readers about being yourself and what is cool and what isn’t. Comics like this keep kids coming back for more. There is a huge sense of achievement in finishing not only one book but an entire series and from there they can try other stories and discover other cool comic books and characters.
Pizza and Taco are hilarious characters who mean well and try their best. They are good friends and always stick up for each other. The stories are not heavy-handed in any way at all but they manage to carry a nice underlying message all the same. No easy feat, and this is one reason I really love this series.
