Strange things happen in the woods in this paranormal middle grade camping mystery. 

A family camping trip takes a turn for the strange when eleven year old Finn’s mum starts acting strange. But can he convince his older brother and their friends that something is happening, and is it all connected to the local legend of the Twilight Walker? 

This is an entertaining story that shows the complexity of sibling dynamics. When Fin’s family goes through a rough patch, his older brother steps in to take care of him, but has picked on Finn ever since. Will this camping trip bring the family together once more, or tear them apart for good?

I like the depth of the sibling dynamic and the journey Finn and Matt go on throughout the book. The writing style allowed for both brothers to share their perspectives which means our understanding of the relationship didn’t feel one sided even though Finn is our main character. I think the way the legend of the Twilight Walker and the Guardian Cats were interwoven into the story was well executed.

Finn trusts their cat Pepper’s reactions after he’s been there to protect him against the unexplainable before, so when he starts reacting strangely, it’s clear something is up. I liked the way the legend of the Twilight Walker developed, the small oddities leaving entices the reader to continue and find out what’s going to happen.

The introduction of the local legend from Maya’s grandmother Kindra fits into the atmospheric stories by the campfire but creates a trail for the story to follow. Without giving away spoilers I found the resolution to be really satisfying. 

This is the third book in the Guardian Cats series, although each book is a standalone adventure. A great choice for middle grade readers looking for something spooky to dive into.
