"A celebration of the imagination and individuality starring a very special young person."
With an idiosyncratic but lovable protagonist and a setting that is very different to the places most of us in the UK call home, plus a narrative that veers from cosy to nail-biting and back again, Flyaway Boy is wonderfully original and well worth pressing into the hands of young readers.
Kabir sees the world differently – more vividly you could say – but it makes him ‘the odd kid’ to his neighbours and school friends. Sometimes even his family struggle to understand him and his tendency to do things that aren’t expected tips their ‘why can’t you be more …’ into ‘why can’t you be less like you?’.
When a boy at school tells Kabir to ‘Stay away’, it all gets too much and he disappears. As people notice that Kabir is not there, quietly and then with more and more noise, everyone starts to look for him. In the end, Kabir finds himself and the stories of where he’s been are quite as wide-ranging as you would expect from this very special young person.
Like its star, this story brims with an awareness of life’s possibilities and is full of warmth, humour and imagination.
