I've adored The Tempest ever since studying it at secondary school and seeing it performed at the Manchester Royal Exchange. It's one of those wonderful plays that stays with you long after you've first encountered it, and returning to it reminds me just how extraordinary Shakespeare's imagination really was.

Set on a mysterious island, the story follows Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who uses his magical powers to conjure a fierce storm and bring his enemies within his reach. What unfolds is a wonderfully rich tale of betrayal, revenge, love, forgiveness and, of course, magic. From the mischievous spirit Ariel to the complex and often misunderstood Caliban, the characters are as fascinating as the world Shakespeare creates around them.

Beneath the magic are myriad questions about power, freedom, justice and humanity that remain remarkably relevant today. It's a timeless classic that deserves to be discovered, performed and enjoyed by every new generation.

About The Tempest

'How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world That has such people in't!' Performed variously as escapist fantasy, celebratory fiction, and political allegory, The Tempest is one of the plays in which Shakespeare's genius as a poetic dramatist found its fullest expression. Significantly, it was placed first when published in the First Folio of 1623, and is now generally seen as the playwright's most penetrating statement about his art.
