Award-winning illustrator John Burningham’s classic adventure of a delightful day’s jaunt in a car. It is a beautiful summer’s day when Mr Gumpy decides to set off in his car. The children and all the animals want to join him. At first, even though it is a bit of a squash, everything goes brilliantly. But then, it begins to rain and the car stuck gets in the mud. How will they all get home safely? Luckily, they do. And everything ends happily. A book to enjoy again and again.
It's a lovely day and Mr Gumpy decides to go for a ride in his motor car. But everyone else wants to come too! As the motor car and its passengers make their way across the field, the rain begins...Mr Gumpy asks for volunteers to push the car, but everyone has an excuse, until it gets so bad that they all have to get out and help. Eventually, the sun shines once more as they drive across the bridge - and there's time for a swim on the way home.
A classic, highly acclaimed picture book from an acknowledged master of the genre - this is a joy to read aloud, to share, and now to listen to as well! The CD features a brilliant reading by Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor in Doctor Who) as well as original music and hilarious sound effects. Perfect for car journeys, as well as
being a useful aid to independent reading; there's a track with a sound for every page-turn so young readers can help to build their confidence.
Praise for Mr Gumpy's Outing:
'A story of real drama observed with gentle humour' - Julia Eccleshare, Guardian
'A wonderful story' - Julia Eccleshare, The Rough Guide to Picture Books
'...a wonderful building story with a delightfully predictable and reassuring ending.' - The Guardian
