Both beautiful and purposeful this is a beautiful collection of poems celebrating the wonderful attributes of nature and spurring children on to thinking about how best to keep all living things on the planet safe. Taken from around the world, including the powerful title poem which comes from Australia, these poems capture the essence of things we take for granted such as weather, birds, water and trees. Without preaching, it is thought-provoking about the desperate need to preserve what we have.
For this celebration of our Earth, distinguished anthologist and founder of the Bookstart programme Wendy Cooling has chosen poems to make children look, think, and ask questions. Why are trees so important? How are motorways damaging our countryside? What can we do about rubbish? What can we do to protect our Earth for the future? Strong, colourful illustrations combine to make this a gift book with a difference.
Poets include Grace Nicholls, Thomas Hardy, Ian Souter, John Milton, Tony Bradman, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Alan Brownjohn, William Blake, Benjamin Zephaniah, Christina Rossetti, Ogden Nash, Andrew Fusek Peters and others from all over the world.
'A timely anthology compiled by Wendy Cooling, with delightful, quirky illustrations by Piet Grobler. The poems not only celebrate the wonder of our earth but encourage children to reflect and question… This book will make a beautiful gift, but also deserves a place in every school library.' The Bookseller (selected as a March Highlight)'Collected by the founder of the Bookstart programme, this volume features beautiful artworks, illustrating a collection of poems that question human impact on the natural environment.' Children’s Buyer’s Guide (selected as a Highlight of the Season)
