"This quirkily inventive picture book sees a pizza circumvent the fact that life is dangerous when you’re delicious!"
June 2025 Picture Book of the Month
Though Eoin McLaughlin’s Frank the Pizza might be stuffed to the crust and slathered with cheese, it certainly isn’t cheesy! Rather, this picture book is fully-loaded with originality.
“It’s hard to tell who your friends are when you’re a pizza. Some people want to meet you. Other people want to eat you”. As a result of this hard truth, Frank the Pizza’s mum has concerns when he’s invited to a birthday party. But Frank is set on going, and already picking out his party outfit, opting to keep it simple with classic pepperoni until his dad intervenes and makes Frank add olives and anchovies as a safety measure.
While the addition of these unpopular toppings have the desired effect (“Who’s ordered this disgusting pizza?” complains one of the party guests), Frank winds up sad and lonely until he meets Frances, a cute cupcake whose parents had taken comparable measures to keep her safe from being chomped. Naturally, “Real friends don’t eat each other”, and Frank and Frances have a whole lot of fun at the party, and make plans for a future playdate.
With characterful, comic illustrations by Mike Byrne, Frank the Pizza is a satisfyingly funny feast of picture book goodness that will have kids giggling at the sheer joy of its absurdity while imbibing a hilariously delivered message around finding your perfect friend.
