Although it was written four decades ago, Harriet the Spy is still a thoroughly modern story. Harriet - bossy, determined, prone to shouting things like ‘I’ll be damned if I’ll got to dancing school!’ - has a great sense of who she is, and is an irresistible character. In her outfit of jeans, sweatshirt plus belt for her tools she spies shamelessly on friends, family and neighbours, then writes up her no-holds-barred notes IN CAPITAL LETTERS in her special notebook. She has probably inspired thousands of readers to become writers themselves, or at least pay closer attention to the world around them, and the book is particularly good for anyone who feels they don’t fit in.
