"The fifth title in the Breadwinner series, exploring the plight of women in Taliban controlled Afghanistan"
Award winning author Deborah Ellis’s fifth title in the Breadwinner series began when Parvana was just a girl – a girl who was brave enough to stand up to the Taliban for her rights and those of all the girls she grew up with.
Never far from danger, Parvana’s absolute conviction, combined with her intelligence, gave her the courage and the capacity to make a difference. Set during the withdrawal of the US and UK forces in the August 2021 the latest episode of the story tells of Parvana’s work protecting girls and women suffering under the un-liberated rule of the Taliban and, in particular, the story of how her family’s attempt to leave for new opportunities in the US were thwarted by the evacuation.
It's 2021, and the Taliban have regained power in Afghanistan. Parvana and Shauzia, the brave protagonists of The Breadwinner, must now flee to escape new dangers from an old enemy. It has been 20 years since Parvana and Shauzia had to disguise themselves as boys to support themselves and their families.
