LoveReading4Kids Says
Alex Latimer’s Gordon Wins It All sees “the meanest goose on earth” return for more comic-book-style capers fuelled by messages around realising that actions have consequences. Delivered in an energetic style that’s perfect for 6+-year-olds to read for themselves, the characterful illustrative style is perfectly paired with the story.
With the help of his friend Anthony the piglet, egotistical Gordon has resolved to make amends for being the “the meanest goose on earth” through being kind and becoming “the Nicest Goose on Earth”. Unfortunately, though, Gordon’s delusions of grandeur prove to be a hindrance. For example, when imagining how his life might be as a good goose, Gordon embarks on a wild flight of fancy around him becoming Mayor of Grover Gardens in order to enjoy a high life of fancy food and helicopter rides — Gordon doesn’t quite get the concept of being kind.
Seeing an opportunity to snare him back, Gordon’s former associates, a gaggle of mean geese, trick him into cheating in a Grand Tournament, and Gordon’s underhand actions don’t go unnoticed: “I saw the mean geese help you to cheat”, says Anthony, “but it was you who cheated. To be good, you have to admit your mistakes”.
While Gordon’s journey to self-awareness and kindness is anything but smooth, with Anthony’s help, he learns (the hard way!) to think about the impact of his actions in a dynamic cautionary tale that’s perfect for newly-independent readers.
