LoveReading4Kids Says
This is a set of 12 decodable books for catch up readers. Each book focuses on a story featuring two or three characters left in charge of a pet. There are adventures with everything from snakes to hamsters, dogs, a pregnant cat and a rather interesting hive of bees. The adventures occur all over the world from house sitting in town, to a river boat, a desert and to an adventure in the Caribbean. They are all rather endearing stories with some charming illustrations and satisfying endings.
The stories follow a common theme of pet sitting, but each can be read without reading the book before. The sitters are all pet lovers but feature different characters in each story. The stories can be read in any sequence, which can be quite useful in the classroom, but also makes it possible to perhaps focus on a particular spelling or sound combination.
These stories can be read after the companion DK Phonic sets – Mel on Mars and Get out of the Game. Whilst they are similar in that they follow adjacent consonants and consonant digraphs, they also have alternative spellings for vowel sounds, such as oo u u-e and ew. These are all clearly laid out at the front of the book.
They would certainly appeal to struggling readers who want a more interesting story line without the confidence or ability to read a more complex story at this stage of their development. These books offer a good storyline simply, in chapters, and with enough content to provoke conversation. This ticks a lot of boxes in a busy classroom.
