Jessie “Mouse” Swift is on the run. After admitting she would like to see her abusive stepfather dead, she ends up discovering him…murdered. That’s where Brooke comes in, Brooke offers Jessie a ride in her cool retro Mustang and Jessie cannot resist. Jessie knows that no matter what happens, she’ll be on the hook for his murder. So, armed with Brooke’s killer mix-tapes, they hit the road and head for the one place that makes sense for them: Disney World.

Normally, this would be Jessie’s dream come true - a cool car, great tunes, road trip acros America. But this is not a fairy tale, they are on the run, and not just from the police. As the noose tightens, they must try to discover if there’s anything worth running away from. Not only that, throughout the story, Jessie discovers that it’s not just her that has a dark secret to hide.

It’s a thrill-ride mixed with emotional discovery mixed again with LGBTQ romance. The trip that Jessie and Brooke take is not idyllic or picture perfect like we see in films. They often get caught up in situations where Jessie feels triggered and her past trauma comes roaring back to greet her.

Simmonds creates a strong sense of paranoia sprinkled with seedy, filthy motels, truly creepy side characters and near misses. What this does is create a support system between Jessie and Brooke that feels authentic and engaging for the reader.

In the moments where they aren’t feeling threatened, they start to act on their crush for one another and this again feels very authentic considering the things they’ve seen and been through, they’d have a bond that could not be replicated with other relationships.

It’s a fast-paced, pedal-to-metal trek that is very touching at the same time, don’t miss it!
