The story of Silas Marner is oii the whole better suited than any other of George Eliot's novels, for school use. But in spiteof its excellent qualities there are two features of the story in its complete form which are usually found to be a source of difficulty to both teachers and pupils. In the first place it is a psychological study, and many of the passages in the story are _too mature even for pupils of the High School age. And furthermore, parts of the story in its original form contain an element of coarseness to which the teacher.
