When Melvin Pebbles moves to the town of Donut Island, he has no idea what’s in store: before he’s even unpacked his vast collection of toy bags (unopened, toys still inside to preserve the mystery), he’s been adopted into the Daily Donut Club by new friend, Rhubarb Plonsky, and by the end of the book, together with third Donut Club member Yoshi Fujikawa, will have foiled an alien invasion and bid to brainwash his new neighbours. As you’d expect from the creator of the inimitable Barry Loser series, this is a blissfully surreal mystery adventure, as weird as it is wonderful, and certain to have readers laughing out loud from beginning to end. Jim Smith’s illustrations are as playful as the plot, and make the whole package even more of a treat. Comic genius!

It was an enjoyable book to read and I would recommend it to my friends who like adventure stories.

This adventure story is set in a mysterious town called Donut Island. In the middle of the town is a massive hole showing a giant lightning strike. There is a girl called Rhubarb and a boy called Yoshi who are friends and together they write the town newspaper. The town newspaper reports all the strange things that happen in Donut Island.

I like this book because a few of the characters are funny and the illustration are really helpful; they also brought the story to life. The characters show a lot of team-work and helped each other no matter what: it is a book about friendship and bravery.

I feel as though the book is aimed at children who are around 7-8 years old because it was easy and fun to read.... Read Full Review

An amazing mystery! 5/5!

In this book, you will find a little boy called Melvin, who is going to live on a new island called Donut Island. He meets some new friends called Rhubarb and Yoshi. The clouds are turning purple, there's a big crack in the island, and the new toys in the local diner seem rather strange! It's up to Melvin and his friends to solve the mystery!
This book was amazing! I loved the mystery and how they solved it. I kept wondering what was going to happen and was so excited to get to the end and see what happened. I didn't want to stop reading! I can't wait to read the next book! Melvin is my favourite character because he's so happy and kind and I'd like to be his friend.... Read Full Review

This is a great book with lots of shocks and surprises. Also, in the end, everything makes sense. Once you start reading it you will not want to stop

This is a book about a boy called Melvin and his next-door neighbour best friend called Rhubarb, who really likes mysteries.

Melvin has always wanted to be cooler ever since he had left his old school. He sees starting at Donut Juniors School as a new start and a chance to be super cool. At Donut Juniors, Rhubarb and Melvin met the Cool Doods Gang. This gang is made up of 3, not cool people called Hector, Dirk and Marjorie. Rhubarb works on a newspaper called The Daily Donut with another of her friends called Yoshi, Melvin has recently joined them. The newspaper is all about Mysteries. It used to be a big hit when Rhubarb’s mum used to do it and school used to help to print out the copies and editing them. Now, however, school do nothing.... Read Full Review
