Sherlock and his brother Mycroft are called back to their family home for the funeral of their mother and while the sense of loss is affecting enough, the family seems to be caught up in a strange and menacing mystery: three men in bizarre disguises break into the house; someone attacks their sister’s fiancé.

Mycroft and Sherlock deduce independently that the mystery is connected to the building of the Suez canal and Sherlock – feeling betrayed by his brother – sets out for Egypt determined to discover just what is going on. The plotting is excellent, the period detail convincing, Sherlock’s observational skills will fascinate and intrigue readers, and as ever the story feels absolutely true to Conan Doyle’s characters. ~ Andrea Reece
