All About Tree Crickets

All About Tree Crickets Synopsis

Tree crickets can be found all over the world - in fields, forests and even city backyards. Male tree crickets have loud, beautiful songs - yet most people do not recognize what is singing. In fact, the song of the Snowy tree cricket is commonly used on TV shows or in movies to enhance the feeling of warm summer night scenes.

This book aims to increase awareness of these insects by explaining all aspects of the life of a tree cricket. In this book, you'll learn about the life cycle and behavior of tree crickets, i.e. where tree crickets live, where their eggs can be found, and how the female put them there. You'll be amazed at the size of newly emerged tree crickets, and will see how their appearance changes as they go through five different stages before becoming an adult.

Included in this book are over 180 photographs which show:

• 18 different species of tree crickets
• antennae colors and markings
• insect anatomy
• the molting process and reproduction. Maps are included to show where different species can be found in the U.S. An easy to use identification key helps readers determine what species of tree cricket they have found. Tips are offered for raising tree crickets, and encouragement is given for scientific study by citizen scientists. Although this book is written with young people in mind, adults interested in entomology or the study of crickets will also find this book useful
