Once again Tom Percival demonstrates his genius ability to use the simplest of words and expressive pictures to articulate and explain to his young readers not just how the world works but also how they themselves work.

This latest book features Queetle and Meeple, brightly coloured blobby creatures who are very confident about their place in the world until they meet! Knowing which way is up is often used in conversation as a metaphor for being right and this tale cleverly turns that concept on its head.

Both Queetle and Meeple cannot be right, can they? No amount of shouting will convince the other and Queetle storms off. But it only takes a trip on a stray rock and suddenly he is falling and bouncing and rolling until he definitely did not know which way was up anymore. His new perspective shows him that perhaps Meeple is right or at least maybe they could meet halfway?

Empathy is all about being able to understand how life is for another person and thus better able to understand that person. It is an essential life skill and as this book delightfully shows it could be as simple as seeing how the world looks to them. This book is a perfect demonstration of compromise, understanding another point of view, and conflict resolution that will be a great discussion starter in PSHE.

It is also a lovely way to demonstrate perspective and opposites.
