Sequel to Golden Boys, Phil Stamper’s Afterglow sees the four gay friends from small-town Ohio career towards graduation while confusing thoughts about their futures all but career out of control. Spot-on in evoking a sense of the shifting sands of time, and the daunting uncertainty that comes with being at a pivotal point in life, it’s filled with a whole lot of heart. 

After a life-changing summer that sparked much soul-searching, Gabriel, Reese, Sal and Heath have returned to school for their senior year, on the brink of making huge decisions about their futures, acutely aware this might be the last time they’re all together.

Keeping secrets and finding the strength to be honest emerges as a major theme, with Sal delaying telling his mom he doesn't want to go to college, and Reese hiding his new passion from boyfriend Heath. Heath, meanwhile is concealing his shoulder injury, terrified about doctor’s bills and scared he won’t be offered a vital baseball scholarship. Lastly, it seems Gabriel is delaying facing the truth about his long-distance relationship.

True to their good natures, the golden boys think things through, work things out, and show great maturity. While they might be heading in different directions, their story ends with a glowing hope that they’ll grow together. Once again, Stamper has delivered a YA gem that brims with positivity.
