While Sam Winston’s One & Everything may not be a “multilingual picturebook” in the way one might expect, it is a beautiful homage to linguistic and cultural diversity. The book begins with the words “Once there were many stories for the world”, before introducing the “one” story, who wanted to take over all other stories, gobbling them up. The book gently and sensitively paves the way for so many relevant discussions with children - who owns our stories?
Who has a right to them? Who should decide how they get told? The illustrations feature a range of scripts, making linguistic diversity visible, and the book is beautifully researched, with input from both researchers and community members with lived experience of endangered languages. Despite the main text being in English only, this book can play a truly important role in supporting linguistic diversity in the classroom.
