We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is, deservedly, recognised as a picture book classic. Now its creators Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury present us with a new book that is certain to be become a much-loved favourite with families everywhere too.
The story in Oh Dear, Look What I Got! is, of course, simple with lots of opportunities for young listeners to join in but builds up beautifully as the pages turn. The hunt in this adventure is for shopping; a child heads out to buy various items but in each case is supplied instead with an animal – a parrot instead of a carrot, a cat instead of a hat, and finally, a bear instead of a chair.
There are lots of chances for children to guess what’s on the next page, via rhyme and those wonderfully wrapped parcels. It culminates in a fantastic party with all the participants, human and animal, dancing together (and all the correct items delivered).
Helen Oxenbury’s illustrations perfectly represent mood and feeling, slipping in details that will make every reading a joy. Expect the child’s repeated outcry as the parcels are opened, ‘Oh dear, look what I got! Do I want that? No I do NOT!’ to become a favourite saying with toddlers across the nation!
