Everything in the Conductoid series has led us to this final instalment. After discovering their father is trapped in a maze by the Dominatay in book one, Scars of the Dominatay; then setting off to cross dimensions to find him at the end of Time's Answer, we begin Maze Masters right where we left off, as Conductoid twins Jack and Phoebe start their journey. Separated on strange new worlds the twins must take on the creators of the Doninatay's disconcerting prison. Maze Masters delivers an out-and-out fantasy adventure, with Jack and Phoebe crossing dimensions in their fight to get their father back. With this focus, the storyline steps away from the mundane school life that featured more prominently in previous books. However I do like that we are given brief insights into the friends and family left behind, so we still get cameos from the colourful cast of side characters I enjoyed in the previous books. Because there is a more high-octane plot to keep the characters busy, I felt that the opportunities for witty retorts and narration by Jack, that shone out for me during the school scenes and were a highlight of the earlier in the series, were unfortunately less frequent. There are still some opportunities for Jack’s quips and wordplay moments that made me smile, but the focus of this final book is firmly on delivering plentiful action and new characters. Jack and Phoebe’s journeys come thick and fast, there’s rapidly changing points of view to drive the plot on and keep you flying through the pages to see what’s happening to each of the twins as they encounter enchanting sirens, self-proclaimed masters of illusions, a kind colossus and a lost and lonely young girl left behind by her people. As the storyline drives towards its action packed conclusion friends old and new will be needed to free everyone trapped in the maze and allow their family to be reunited. This is an action packed finale to an adventurous series that has been building momentum with each instalment. Fans of fantasy adventures will devour it.
