"Inspiring hands-on exploration of 25 significant scientific discoveries."
Following on from the award-winning, This Book Will Make you an Artist, and featuring the same illustrator’s distinctive and striking style, I can see this book having the same success. It’s a brilliant format for making a subject accessible and engaging.
Taking this time 25 amazing scientists and giving fascinating facts and detail about their life and how the discovery they are most renowned for came about, and then giving simple and safe instructions for young people to be able to undertake experiments which will demonstrate the discovery.
As the introduction says, ‘ this book will let you learn about science through doing it!’ The opening pages also give a very clear explanation of the scientific method, which moves forward by a continual process of trial and error. A failure can lead to a greater success, so resilience and perseverance is essential to being a scientist. It also outlines the basic science skills and equipment that will be needed and, of course, a valuable section on keeping safe.
The choice of scientists and the field of their enquiry covers a good range of historical periods, worldwide locations and a balance of genders. If there is a slight preponderance of space, astrophysics and astronomy related discoveries, that is to be expected from the passion of the expert author, Dr Shiela Kanani, planetary physicist, science presenter and school science teacher. I can see the book being very useful for fellow teachers who will want to utilise the excellent instructions for the fun experiments which are equally suited to the home or classroom environment.
A really attractive, entertaining and highly informative addition to any library or bookshelf.
